Canadian Hosted Ethical AI
CanTrust has adopted the Nextcloud Ethical AI rating system. As a supporter of Open Source and clear policy, we have a responsibility to protect and inform users.
Ethical AI Rating Levels

What is ethical AI? How is it rated under the Nextcloud system?
The Nextcloud rating system is based on these factors for a particular integration of AI in Nextcloud:
- Is the Software for referencing, reasoning, and training, Open Source?
- Is the LLM freely available for self hosting?
- Is the training data available to use, and is it free?
All of these points are met: Green 🟢
None are met: Red 🔴
1 condition is met: Orange 🟠
2 conditions are met: Yellow 🟡
Additional Note about Rating AI
It is impossible to prove there is no bias. There is. While we recognize the inherent challenge in verifying the complete absence of bias, this system is designed to flag significant biases when detected. For instance, any racial or gender discrimination observed in a face recognition technology dataset or model at the time of our latest evaluation will be explicitly noted.
It is important to underscore that the considerations surrounding ethical AI extend beyond bias alone. Legal complexities related to data usage, particularly concerning copyright, and the considerable environmental impact due to energy-intensive operations of these networks, such as carbon footprint, are equally vital.
Despite their importance, these aspects present formidable challenges in quantification and objective assessment. As a result, while we strive to inform users of potential issues, they are currently not incorporated into our explicit rating scale.
We emphasize that users should undertake their own due diligence. To facilitate this, we recommend leveraging the Nextcloud Ethical AI Rating for further insight tailored to specific use cases.
This approach ensures a comprehensive evaluation of AI technologies, encouraging informed decisions that balance technological benefits with ethical responsibilities. This is an on-going process.
